Boating Team Member

About the role:

Do you have a keen passion for boats? Are you keen to deliver a lifeline to a community all year round whilst having the unique opportunity to live on a tidal island? If you have a desire in growing your boating experience or have a particular or multiple relevant skill that you would like to share with the rest of the committed team members, then this is the opportunity for you. St Aubyn Estates is looking for a Boating Team Member to join the busy team on St Michael’s Mount on a permanent basis. This is a full-time position covering an all year round service, living on St Michael’s Mount or one person and their immediate family.

 

This role will have a focus on providing support to the Boating Department. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • To maintain an all year-round link between Marazion and St Michael's Mount
  • To pass and obtain a St Michael's Mount Boat license along with additional qualifications
  • To operate and participate in all areas of the ferry boat operation safely and efficiently as managed by the Head Boatman.
  • To assist with vehicular transportation and deliveries when the causeway is open.
  • To work alone with good efficiency and confidence, both as operator of the ferry and working in the boatshed or any project at the time.
  • To be flexible according to the working rota covering 7 days a week, as stated by the Head Boatman.
  • To ensure your area of work (Ferry boat, St Michael and Boatshed) is maintained in a safe and tidy manner.
  • To work in your skilled area sharing knowledge with the department and to learn from others.
  • To be able to carry out mechanical repairs to all vessels.
  • To assist in the routine maintenance of the ferryboats, vehicles and the St Michael.
  • To be able to record and produce record sheets of all tasks carried out on any vessel whether in repair or annual servicing.
  • To assist with the maintenance of the landings and causeway including work ‘out of hours’.
  • To undertake the training of becoming a licensed Boatman, giving all training the required focus.
  • To be mindful that this position is truly multi-disciplinary and will involve many and varied duties such as delivering stores for the catering and retail outlets, transporting island residents and any other duty reasonably requested to ensure the continued smooth running of the island.

Gardener – Maternity Cover

About the role:

Are you interested in growing your recent experience by working for one of the most iconic visitor attractions in the Southwest? This is an exciting opportunity for a Gardener to join the busy team at St Aubyn Estates on a fixed term basis for a minimum of 12 months. This will be a full time, temporary position. 

This role will have a focus on providing support to the outstanding gardening team. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the day to day maintenance and development of the garden, taking delegated responsibility for aspects of the work.
  • Ensure the highest standards of conservation, horticulture and visitor experience.
  • Assist in a range of practical horticultural work to develop, enhance and conserve the garden (and the wider landscape) and contribute to the delivery of associated projects.
  • Develop your own horticultural skills and knowledge with in-house training from the experienced team.
  • Work as a team player alongside colleagues and volunteers.
  • Engage with visitors to the garden to deliver the best possible visitor experience.
  • Plan and implement work with visitor access and their interest in mind.
  • Provide a great service to all our external and internal customers.
  • Be smart, polite and helpful at all times.
  • Be aware of all the activities offered on the Mount and be able to answer a range of questions (or know who to ask).
  • Strive for sustainability and efficiency.
  • Be an advocate for the St Aubyn Estates and the National Trust.
  • Assist with any other tasks which are reasonably requested, for the better performance of your duties or for the achievement of our vision.

The package:

An hourly rate plus 28 days holiday (pro rata).
